Matthew Suarez

Undergraduate Researcher (joined the Gunasooriya Lab in Fall 2025)
B.Sc. Chemical Engineering, University of Oklahoma, Expected-2029

Matthew was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, into a family of engineers, which inspired him to learn more about the world around him. His curiosity grew throughout high school, and by the time he was a Senior, the Chemistry and Physics classes he took pushed him to learn more about Chemical Engineering. It was through reading the book Energy of Human History by Richard Rhodes that he was shown that civilization is always looking for innovations to improve society, and he wanted to be part of that more than anything. Research seemed like the clearest path to make change quickly, and he joined the Gunasooriya Lab in hopes of eventually writing papers that could be used for the advancement of science. In his free time, he enjoys reading, playing tennis, and playing chess. In the future, he hopes to use the skills acquired from research to work for an upstream oil and gas company and continue to develop sustainable energy solutions.
